Davis Gallery cordially invites you to the solo exhibition
Drive me Inside by Maria Koshenkova
Opening 16 February 16 - 19
You are hereby invited to experience the new series of work by Maria Koshenkova. Koshenkova’s sculptures were most recently included in the official Danish Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale. Her new works have been a year in the making. In this exhibition she draws our attention towards the most basic conditions of human existence.
Koshenkova started to make these sculptures in February, 2022, during a residency in Detroit. She found her inspiration in a city - which after the death of American car production - has become a symbol of material and human collapse. But then she was knocked off her feet herself. Her teenage boy was diagnosed with a serious mental illness, and at the same time, the Russian invasion of Ukraine hit like a personal tragedy for the artist, who has a Russian/Ukranian background.
When faced with desperate circumstances humans can break down – or they can reach out for all available stable structures around them to get through.
“Drive Me Inside” tells this story through sculptures of fragile, exposed, vulnerable organ like glass shapes that are clinging to life on twisted recycled metal support structures.
In her sculptures a space of lived experience and poetry is created on the frontier between realism and abstraction. A space where brutality is balanced with an aesthetic beauty of detail.
Maria Koshenkova shows us that personal hardship might make you weak, wounded and bleeding. But that this weakness at the same time can be transformed into an extremely strong and powerfull artistic language. I hope that you will come and take part in this very unique experience.
Welcome
